عن الحملة

Provide a drought-stricken region of the world with the machinery to make as many life-saving clean water wells as needed, for local refugees and needy people.

This Ramadan, help us buy a Drilling Rig to make countless wells where they’re needed in East Sudan. Imagine donating the amount for 1 well, and sharing in making 60+ wells per year… the sadaqah jariyah is off the scale!

In Ramadan, many great people just like you will be giving one of the best types of charity: Clean Water.

We all know how much reward there is in making a water well for people who don’t have access to clean water. It’s one of the greatest continuous legacy acts (sadaqah jariyah) that you can do.

Now imagine if you could sponsor the drill itself and keep making wells, with your single act of charity! How far could your reward continue? It’s practically unlimited!

CAN YOU DO IT? CAN YOU HELP US BUY A WELL-DRILLING MACHINE?

We believe you can.

All this possibility of reward – and in the Holy Month of Ramadan? Don’t wait! Help us reach the target and let’s get clean water to thousands of refugees and needy local people in East Sudan.

Who will your legacy help?

The refugee camps of East Sudan and their surrounding villages are built upon lands afflicted by various climate difficulties, including seasonal droughts. Even when flooding occurs, it brings only dirty water which carries disease and destruction.

The refugees have fled conflicts in Eritrea, Ethiopia and surrounding areas. They arrive in East Sudan with nothing. Some have been living in the camps for over 50 years without being able to return to their homes, because of the difficult situation in the region.

Refugees and poor residents of East Sudan walk miles on foot daily, queuing up at one of the few water wells already constructed. Countless children are among those who make these treacherous daily journeys, carrying heavy containers of water on their backs or their heads in the blazing heat. In summer, temperatures reach well over 40°C.

This Ramadan will be one of the hottest for decades, as it falls in the peak summer season for East Sudan. Making individual wells isn’t enough – we need to make as many as we can!

The urgent need

Running water is not available in the remote areas where refugees live. The only way to provide a reliable source of clean, safe water is to dig deep enough into the rocky ground until it becomes possible to pipe from reservoirs beneath the surface.

Digging cannot be done by hand to reach such depths. Hiring equipment to carry out such a task, and the transport to bring the machinery and resources to the remote areas, is too much of a financial burden for any community to afford. So, the constant cycle of walking all day for water continues for thousands of people.

When a well is sponsored by someone through charity, that’s fantastic. Companies can be hired to construct the well for that community. But it’s still just one well, and will only serve the people who are living close enough to walk to it.

The real need is so much greater than individual wells.

What your legacy provides

The biggest cost of making wells is hiring and transporting a machine powerful enough to drill a borehole which reaches deep into the earth’s surface.

Ethar proposes to raise funds and purchase a high quality Drilling Rig such as those manufactured by Atlas Copco, complete with transportation facility. This would remove the biggest barrier to water well digging and enable us to vastly step up the provision of wells across the region.

It’s such a beautiful sadaqah jariyah, and a very unique opportunity to get involved in a wonderful legacy this Ramadan.

Give today and make your reward limitless! Let this be your most fruitful Ramadan ever.

Operational context and drilling machine rationale

Well-construction projects will be implemented in states characterised with Basement Complex rock, where groundwater is found in fracture zones, so it is very important to drill the borehole with a hammer rig. The combine machine will solve the problems of water shortage in refugee camps and among the local community.

All the refugee camps lie in basement rocks in rural areas and suffer from shortages of safe and adequate water, e.g. the Um Sagata refugee camp lies in an area characterised with basalt intrusion through the Nubian sandstone formation.

The combine drilling machine will allow us to drill deep bore holes for drinking water, even in fracture zones or cutting across the basaltic dykes in Nubian sandstone formation. Geologists drilling into the hard rock to extract water for drinking are currently relying on rent of a combine machine (e.g. water projects in Um Gargour and Um Sagata refugee camps with successful outcomes).

Therefore, if we own a drilling unit most of the water challenges in refugee camps can be solved without prohibitive rental overheads in future.

 Why Ethar?

Ethar Relief has a permanent humanitarian presence in East Sudan, and has been constructing and maintaining a network of wells funded by kind donors. To date, these projects required hiring a drilling rig externally. However, we are experienced in constructing and maintaining water well infrastructure and have been doing so for more than a decade in this region. We already work with a team responsible for well-digging, and acquiring a drilling rig would remove the biggest cost barrier to future construction.

Who we are

We are a UK-registered charity established to help refugees, displaced and disadvantaged people in the Horn of Africa region. Ethar Relief was set up more than a decade ago by former refugees from Eritrea who were liberated from refugee camps in East Sudan. We want to end the suffering that we know exists in these places.

2021 signifies our 15th year providing humanitarian help to refugees.

Today, in addition to providing aid and a comprehensive programme of development projects, Ethar Relief strives to raise awareness of refugees in the region, who are considered to have been forgotten by the international community. The UN Refugee Agency states that international aid for the vast number of refugees that flee conflict in the region is inadequate, and much more needs to be done to avert the ongoing humanitarian crisis in East Africa.
