تحدد اللجنة (UN-Water) الموضوع السنوي لليوم العالمي. وموضع عام 2021 هو «تثمين المياه». والهدف من ذلك هو إيجاد فهم أكثر شمولاً لكيفية تثمين أناس مختلفين للمياه في سياقات مختلفة حتى نتمكن من حماية هذا المورد الثمين للجميع. دور المياه في الأسر المعيشية والمدارس وأماكن العمل ومرافق الرعاية الصحية حاسم الأهمية. وعلاوة على ذلك، فإن خدمات المياه والصرف الصحي والنظافة الصحية (WASH) تزيد من هذه الأهمية، ويتجلى ذلك في تحسين الصحة، لا سيما في سياق جائحة (19-COVID).
